Life is busy, which makes it difficult to prioritise self-care. The mid-term break provides us with some respite to re-focus and look after our wellbeing.

PLC Lead Psychologist, Daleen Engelbrecht, recommends these five tips to help establish positive self-care habits.

1) Make time for a ‘mood booster’

Do something you really enjoy this weekend. This differs from person-to-person, but make sure you spend at least 15 minutes per day doing something you really enjoy.

2) Look for the positives

We sometimes get caught in a ‘thinking trap’ where we focus on everything that is going wrong in our lives and miss everything that is going right. Take a break from thinking about all the things you would like to change about your life and focus on the present.

3) Try a social media-free day

I know this sounds impossible, but give this a try. Use this break to catch up with family, friends and maybe even someone new.

4) Write it down

Start a journal or make a list of self-care activities. Start testing them out.

5) Get moving

Research shows that physical activity helps your body to release endorphins (this helps you to feel good). This weekend, go for a walk, dance, or play a game of sport with your loved ones.
