In celebration of our amazing teaching staff, we will be showcasing a staff member each week.
This week we feature Mark Thomas, Director of Music.
Originally from Melbourne, Mark relocated to Perth in 2001, taking up the position of Director of Music at Mercy College before joining PLC in 2002. He was appointed Director of Music in 2007 and has inspired and led a creative and dynamic Music Department for the last ten years.
Along with many of the other music teachers at PLC, Mark is an accomplished professional musician, having performed on trumpet with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and Peter Sullivan Big Band, as well as many other groups. This experience enables him to provide a unique perspective to his students and supports them to strive for excellence, both at school and beyond.
What inspires you?
Overwhelmingly, the students! From the first notes of our beginner Year 2 Suzuki string and Year 5 band students to the masterful performances from our Year 12 ATAR musicians or the Pipe Band marching on ANZAC Day, their passion and talent inspires me greatly.
What is important to you as a teacher?
I fundamentally believe in the access of quality music education for all children. For example, our “Music Everyday” programme in the Junior School allows students to benefit intrinsically from practical music education, while also supporting their cognitive, social and emotional development.
What are you working on at the moment?
We are currently embedding the Year 5 Band into the classroom programme, facilitating a more consistent and connected delivery of music curriculum.
