In full bloom for spring, the stunning garden locations and View Street Marketplace will offer an array of special guest performances, complimentary demonstrations, and entertainment.

Enjoy an impressive programme including en plein air painting, floral paper art, spring-inspired floral and table setting demonstrations, a local historian, and musical performances by PLC ensembles including the PLC Pipe Band and past and present students.

Bernice Wright (1950) – En Plein Air Painting

Award-winning watercolour artist and Old Collegian (1950) – Bernice Wright turned 90 this year and returns to PLC to paint en plain air for the 2022 Open Garden Day.

A regular contributor to the annual OCA Art Exhibition, Bernice’s picturesque landscape paintings of iconic West Australian locations will captivate guests. 

“En Plein Air” is a French expression meaning ‘in the open air’ and refers to the act of painting outdoors. Plein air artists capture the spirit and essence of a landscape or subject by incorporating natural light, colour and movement into their works.

Caroline Muscat – En Plein Air Painting

Celebrated Parisian impressionist – Caroline Muscat, will paint en plein air for the 2022 Open Garden Day.

Taking joyful inspiration from the Australian landscape, Caroline shows a fond appreciation of native trees and flowers. Caroline’s signature style of mixing organic shapes with a bold and vibrant colour palette will delight garden guests.

Cerina Floral Atelier – Floral Arrangement Demonstration

Talented floral designer and past PLC parent, Cerina Triglavcanin, will host spring entertaining inspired floral demonstrations in one of our stunning garden locations.

Cerina, a boutique event floral designer, will guide the audience through a step-by-step demonstration to create a beautiful and colourful vessel arrangement and bud vases to complement a stunning spring-time tablescape by Side Serve. The modern, grouped and sustainable design will be created using homegrown and bought florals.

Emma van Schouwen (2020) – Vocalist

The 2020 Arts Captain returns to PLC for Open Garden Day to delight us with her beautiful voice. Emma van Schouwen who was a recipient of the School’s Vocal Music Bursary, will perform at The Stables’ Café.

Jotterbook Flowers – Crepe Paper Floral Demonstration

Jotterbook Flowers is Perth’s original crepe paper flower studio, founded by Singaporean-Australian artist Carrissa Wu.

Carrissa will host inspiring crepe paper flower demonstrations at one of our historic Peppermint Grove gardens on display.

Enjoy Carrissa’s unique creative style and love of flowers, as she shares ‘tips and tricks’ to guide the audience step-by-step through creating realistic paper blooms.

Laura Rogers (2015) – Soprano

Talented soprano and Old Collegian – Laura Rogers (2015), returns to PLC in 2022 to perform at The Stables Café for Open Garden Day.

During her time at PLC, Laura was actively involved in numerous musical ensembles and productions. Laura went on to complete two years of Classical Voice training at the highly acclaimed West Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA).

PLC Creative Arts & Technology Exhibition

We invite you to attend the PLC Creative Arts & Technology Exhibition, where the View Street building will be transformed into a gallery showcasing the works of emerging artists and designers from Years 7 to 12.

This year’s Creative Arts & Technology Exhibition – InSight, will display a spectacular array of visual arts, woodworks, textiles, design and media to be enjoyed by all.

PLC Junior School Art Stall

As a follow-up to their learning, the PLC Year 4 stall will be selling recycled insect hotels and some insect-related textiles. Open Garden Day is always such a wonderful experience for the students to share their knowledge with the community.

PLC Perth Pipe Band

The PLC Perth Pipe Band is Australia’s oldest all-female pipe band and has been proudly performing for over four decades.

The PLC Perth Pipe Band has been a regular feature at events throughout Perth, including ANZAC Day Parades in Perth city, the Perth Royal Show, Lilac Hill cricket matches, and many military events.

The 2022 PLC Perth Pipe Band will march along the pedestrian-only View Street for a spectacular performance not to be missed.

Richard Offen – Historian/Guest Speaker

Popular local historian, broadcaster, and author of “Perth Then and Now” – Richard Offen joins Open Garden Day once again as a special guest speaker.

Richard will visit several picturesque gardens to share unique and interesting stories behind the properties as well as historical facts. ”

Launching in November, his new book “A Perth Camera” is a treasure trove of rediscovered images by the late Ernie Polis from a lifetime spent photographing the city. This collection of previously unpublished images give a unique view of the city from the 1950s through to the 1990s.

Sabrina Bruni-Zappia from Side Serve – Table Setting Demonstration

Founder and Director of Side Serve, Sabrina Bruni-Zappia will style a beautiful spring-time tablescape utilising a curated mix of wares, complemented by floral creations from Cerina Floral Atelier.

Specialising in boutique tableware hire, Side Serve was born from a desire to adorn every table with unique, tactile, statement wares.

Samantha Deykin (2019) – Soprano

Gifted soprano and Old Collegian – Samantha Deykin (2019), returns to PLC in 2022 to perform at The Stables Café for Open Garden Day.

Currently studying the Bachelor of Music: Classical Voice/Opera at the highly acclaimed West Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA), Samantha’s voice and performance repertoire is as much varied as it is versatile.

Samantha has played ensemble parts and leads throughout her performing career, including productions One Thousand Paper Cranes, Lord of the Flies, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Into the Woods (Lucinda), Big Fish, Wolves, Boing Boom Bust, Chicago (Mary Sunshine) and Footloose (Wendy Jo) whilst at PLC.

Most recently she was in WAAPA’s productions of The Pirates of Penzance (2021) and Hansel and Gretel (2022).

Scotch College Junior School Art Stall

The IB Primary Years Programme supports entrepreneurial imagination. The students have created a range of custom-made loom band jewellery, designed to inspire school pride and joy. This limited-edition collection will be available for purchase on Open Garden Day.

These stylish and modern fashion accessories are available in two sizes and hope to support both participants and spectators at PLC Inter-House and Inter-school events.

The Burbs

‘The Burbs’ acoustic cover duo is the collaboration of vocalist Sha van de Veire and guitarist, Andrew Row, both PLC parents. They will perform at the PLC Marketplace.

What began as a handful of PLC parents and colleagues gathering every other month to play loud rock music from their youth, morphed into The Burbs as Andrew and Sha explore acoustic versions of their favourite songs, performing them at gigs and functions for friends and the community.
