ISSUE 001   -  02 February 2007

From the Head of Junior School

Dear Parents,

Welcome to the start of the academic year and the very first Junior School Links for 2007. As this issue contains a great deal of information regarding events, activities and school programmes we are sending it home as a hard copy.

However, the regular Junior School Links is normally available to download from the PLC website weekly (and usually on a Friday). Copies will be electronic from the next edition (9 February) onwards. There are minimal numbers available as hard copies from Junior School reception for parents who do not have internet access.

The process to download Junior School Links from the website is as follows:

  1. An automatic email notification is generated to parents advising that Junior School Links is available on the PLC website (website address is http://www.plc.wa.edu.au). Your email address was supplied to the School with the return of the Confirmation of Details form that was sent out at the end of 2006.
  2. Parents can then visit the website and go to the Home page and click on the relevant Links to download (eg Current Junior School Links).
  3. Archived Junior School Links newsletter are available from the News and Events page of the website.

Junior School Links is an important means of communication with parents so please do tag the PLC website to access our news, achievements and events.

I share with you again the poem The Question is... Why? Shortly after the end of the 2006 academic year, we received notification of our authorisation as an International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO), Primary Years Programme (PYP), School. The whole premise of the PYP is Inquiry. In more traditional situations, teachers are the dominant controllers of the questions but that does not fit with the idea of the International Baccalaureate Learner Profile and developing internationally minded students.

The Question Is…
The question is
How come the teacher asks all the questions when I am the one who needs to know things?
The question is
Why am I supposed to have the answers to all my parents’ questions when they can’t answer mine?
The question is
Why do scientists ask ten questions for every answer that they get but I have to answer seven out of ten questions to pass?
The question is
Why do politicians learn not to answer questions while I must learn how to answer them?
The question is
Why questions have to be answered fast in school when philosophers take years to answer them?
The question is
Why are there so many little questions in school when Marie Curie spent her whole life on just one big question?
The question is
Why must I find answers to already asked questions when I have questions that have not been answered?
The question is
Why can’t I be in charge of the questions?

So, to Alison Viney (PYP Coordinator) and the staff and student of PLC Junior School, congratulations on your authorisation as an International Baccalaureate, Primary Years Programme School. To the entire Junior School community, best wishes for a happy, challenging and successful academic year and remember to be in charge of your questions.

Kindest regards
Denise Mason
Acting Head of Junior School

Junior School Photo Day
Class photographs for 2007 will be taken on Tuesday 6 February. This will necessitate changes in the uniform that some children usually wear on Day 4.

  • Pre-Kindergarten children to wear their normal school attire.
  • Kindergarten, Pre-Primary and Year 1 children to wear their Junior Primary uniform. Boys should wear their shorts and striped polo shirts and the girls may choose, if they wish, to wear the pinafore or shorts.
  • The Year 2, 3 and 4 girls have swimming on Day 4 but must come to School in their full summer uniform plus their ties. They should bring their bathers, towels, goggles and caps in their PE bag.
  • Girls in Year 5 to 6 are to wear their full School uniform with their ties.

Please could you assist us by making sure that the children all have clean, neat uniforms and clean shoes. Long hair should be tied back and the girls should have white ribbons or scrunchies in their hair. Ties must be worn to School. Girls may take them off once the photos have been taken.

Your help with this is appreciated. Photo Day is quite busy and the day runs smoother for the children if they are well prepared. If your child has a music lesson on this day, please advise the teacher so that your child is not missing during the class photo.

PYP in the Junior School
In December PLC received official notification of the Junior School as an Authorised International Baccalaureate school. This was very exciting as the efforts of staff and children were rewarded with the achievement of this outcome.

What does this mean for PLC?

  • PLC officially becomes part of a growing international education community with greater access to resources, professional learning and world curriculum research.
  • Our excellent teaching and learning practice will continue.

Purposeful, open-ended inquiry is a feature of  an effective school/classroom and Primary Years Programme. This inquiry is based on powerful ideas which are relevant across a range of curriculum areas. Inquiry allows the children to be engaged in their learning which is based upon real and significant concepts

The IB Learner Profile is an essential element of the PYP. It is the essence of what IBO is all about - striving to develop an international person. The elements of the learner profile are inquirer, knowledgeable, thinker, communicator, principled, open-minded, caring, risk-taker, balanced and reflective. By developing these qualities our children will be well equipped in any situation.

The granting of Authorisation means that PLC Junior School will continue to strive for excellence in education by sharing, learning and reflecting.

    PLC Playgroup
An invitation is extended to parents and children to attend a playgroup at Summers House every Friday of Term 1, between 9.00 am and 11.00 am, beginning Friday 2 February with Pre-Kindergarten teacher, Rossalea Wallace. Please bring your own morning tea, hats and please remember to apply sunscreen. We look forward to seeing you there

    PLC Walking School Bus
PLC’s Walking School Bus has grown to be the biggest in the state.  Amongst other things, it aims to help alleviate traffic congestion at the end of the school day by providing the security of adult supervision for the girls to walk to a local park for pick up. It is an initiative of the Parents’ Committee working with the Department of Planning and Infrastructure.

The Walking School Bus is available to girls in Years 1 to 6 and their younger siblings and older sisters. If your daughter wants to try the bus she is welcome to join us at the rotunda by the Western drive through. The girls’ bags, musical instruments etc will continue to be transported by car.   Please download full details of the walking school bus and return the permission sheet. to Junior School reception, alternatively contact Libby Eustance on 9385 0869, 0412 553 680 or eustance@iinet.net.au

Now in its second year, the calendar is a joint community project with the aim to promote greater community awareness of the importance of recycling and waste reduction. Calendars are available at Junior School Reception and Senior School Student and Community Services. A flyer, with an order form, is available to download from the PLC website by clicking on the link: Recycling Calendar.
